Global Schools, Siemens Energy, and Possible Lab Highlight the Schools for Goal 7 Project at the ECOSOC Partnership Forum

The SDSN’s Global Schools Program and  partners hosted an event at this year’s ECOSOC Partnership Forum on “Schools for Goal 7: Transformative Education for Clean and Accessible Energy for All.” This Forum aimed to unite governments, UN agencies, international organizations, educators, and civil society to highlight impactful partnerships that drive progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As SDG 7 will be formally reviewed during this year’s  UN High-Level Political Forum, it made the discussion on education to further renewable energy initiatives even more timely. 

The event brought together education leaders, industry partners, and game designers to explore how education can act as a powerful accelerate for SDG7 and the broader energy transition. It featured Amanda Abrom, Director of the Global Schools Program, SDSN; Rocio Millan Almonte, Senior Project Manager of STEM Initiatives at Siemens Energy; Alba Rodríguez Agüero, Director of Innovation at Possible Labs; and Lucía Vázquez García, Education Consultant, Global Schools Program, SDSN.

A central theme raised was the gap between the skills demanded by the energy transition and the current education pipeline. Speakers highlighted the need to reimagine how clean energy concepts are introduced, taught, and sustained in communities. 

Another key focus was the role of engaging, accessible learning models. Speakers shared how interactive and gamified approaches can make complex energy topics more accessible, understandable, and motivating for students. A key example was the Minecraft Education Planet Rescuers Game and curriculum, which is integrated into the Schools for Goal 7 project. The game allows students to experiment with real-world challenges, meet scientists, and actively create solutions, using teamwork and critical thinking. 

Finally, the speakers highlighted the importance of partnerships and long-term collaboration. By coming together with networks, industry, technical expertise and classrooms, long-term partnerships can support learning experiences that are both globally relevant and locally adaptable.
