Written by Abigail Chifusa, Global Schools Project Officer.

The world is witnessing a momentous shift towards sustainability, and at the forefront of this movement are individuals who dedicate their lives to the cause of creating a more sustainable and equitable planet.

At the core of this global wave of change, Shweta Awasthi, a Global Schools Program Advocate, was honored with the Sustainability Innovator Award 2023 by the esteemed Guardians of the Green. This recognition is a testament to Shweta’s unwavering dedication, innovative thinking, and creative solutions in the field of sustainability.

The Sustainability Innovators Award (SIA) is not just any accolade. It goes beyond, bringing together individuals, businesses, and communities from around the world, uniting them in a shared vision of a sustainable future.

As part of the awards, SIA offers the Sustainability Innovators Program (SIP), a dynamic initiative that encourages active participation in sustainable actions and initiatives. Shweta Awasthi had the privilege of attending the award ceremony on September 22, 2023, at Shangri-La Eros in New Delhi, where she joined fellow sustainability champions in celebrating this remarkable occasion.

Shweta’s selection as the recipient of the Sustainability Innovator Award for 2023 is a well-deserved acknowledgment of her incredible contributions to the field of sustainability. Her role as a Global Schools Advocate has been central in achieving this recognition. She has not only enhanced her ability to carry out her work effectively but has also gained resources, a supportive network, and access to a large educators network to share ideas.

Collaborating with fellow educators and Advocates who share her passion for integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into education has been a constant source of inspiration. Shweta’s commitment to making the SDGs a core part of her social science lesson plans has been progressive for both her students and herself. She has employed a variety of creative and engaging activities to make the SDGs tangible and relevant to her students’ lives.

From guiding students to design their own Currency Coins to promote SDG 11: Sustainable Cities, to organizing tree plantation drives and special assemblies focused on SDG 13: Climate Action, Shweta’s initiatives have had a profound impact on her students’ understanding of global challenges. By grounding these activities in real-world issues, she has helped her students foster a profound sense of responsibility as conscientious global citizens.

The Sustainability Innovator Awards (SIA) is  a global platform dedicated to honoring and celebrating the contributions of individuals and organizations committed to sustainability. These awards not only acknowledge the efforts of those like Shweta but also inspire others to join the journey towards a sustainable future.

The Global Schools Program applauds Shweta for her outstanding contributions and looks forward to the positive changes she will continue to inspire.
